Common Investment Terminology:

What is a stock's price-to-earnings ratio?

A stock's P/E ratio is a tool for comparing the prices of different common stocks by assessing how much the market is willing to pay for a share of each corporation's earnings.

It is calculated by dividing the current market price of a stock by the earnings per share.

What is a stock's price-to-book ratio?

The price-to-book ratio is a measure of the net worth or equity of each share of common stock.

Book value per share is calculated by dividing the equity of a company by the total shares outstanding in a company.

Price-to-book value ratio is calculated by dividing the price of a stock by the book value per share.

What is earnings yield and how is it calculated?

Earnings yield is the reciprocal of the price to earnings ratio.

The price to earnings ratio is the current market price divided by the current earnings. For example, say you have a stock trading for $40 per share with earnings of $2 per share. The price to earnings ratio is calculated as follows:

P.E. Multiple= price/earnings — or — $40/$2= the P.E. Multiple of 20.

If we know the P.E. multiple, we can find the earnings yield by taking the reciprocal of that number:

1/20=.05 or an earnings yield of 5%.

The earnings yield is often compared with the yield on bonds to assess the relative attractiveness of investments in bonds versus stocks.

How can I compare a mutual fund's performance?

When evaluating a fund's performance, the most important thing to remember is to compare apples to apples.

For example, comparing a small company equity fund to the Russell 2000 Index is a better indication of performance than comparing a small company equity fund to the S&P 500.

In the case of the Value and Value Plus Funds, two funds that invest in small company stocks using a value-based investment philosophy, we believe the appropriate benchmark index is the Russell 2000 Value Index.

What is total return?

Total return is a measure of a fund's performance including reinvested dividends and capital appreciation.

Quoted performance figures may be calculated for different time periods, and therefore, it is important to check the time period used.

What is dollar cost averaging?

Dollar-cost averaging is a popular investment strategy, which calls for investing the same amount of money each month, quarter or year.

One advantage of this strategy is that you automatically buy more shares when the price is low and fewer shares when the price is high.

Dollar cost averaging does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets.

It involves continuous investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels. You should consider your financial ability to invest in both market ups and downs.

Russell 2000 Index includes the 2,000 firms from the Russell 3000 Index with the smallest market capitalizations. All indices are unmanaged. It is not possible to invest directly in an index.

Russell 2000 Value Index measures the performance of those Russell 2000 companies with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values. All indices are unmanaged. It is not possible to invest directly in an index.
